NFL Players Association Georgetown Lombardi Award

The NFL Players Association award honors a person who has faced cancer and who possesses those qualities that made Coach Lombardi an inspiration to all people - dependability, courage, discipline and honor. 

2016 Recipient

Chris Mortensen, ESPN


        American journalist providing reports for ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown,    MondayNight Countdown, SportsCenter, ESPN Radio and ESPN.com.

In January 2016, Mortensen announced that he had been diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer. In September 2016, after taking a leave of absence to focus on his treatment and recovery, Mortensen announced some positive news: "I received very encouraging news last week from my oncologist team of doctors at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center that now enables me to completely focus on recovery rather than treatment." and that "The stage IV throat [oropharyngel] cancer that was diagnosed in early January and treated with intensive chemotherapy and radiation has been virtually reduced to zero detection of the disease through the latest scans and exams."


The Margaret L. Hodges Leadership Award

In her honor, the Gala committees established an award to present to remarkable individuals who embody and follow her can-do leadership spirit. It is bestowed as a centerpiece of the Gala to pay tribute to sustained contributions of time, energy, financial resources, and leadership.

Bonnie J. Roberts, Founding Vice Chair, Lombardi Gala

Bonnie is a licensed registered nurse who through working as a volunteer, added the fields of public television, marketing, public relations, donor relations and event fundraising to her resume. Due to her background in non-profit public television, and organizing live fundraising events, Lombardi Gala Founder, Margaret Hodges, sought her assistance in establishing the all-volunteer Lombardi Gala in 1985, with Bonnie becoming the Gala's first founding vice chair in 1986. Bonnie joined GUMC in 1992 and was the point person for the Gala along with co-creating and implementing several other highly successful fundraisers including: The Georgetown Steeplechase Races at Morven Park, The Washington Post Super Sale, the Women & Wine Event and the Men's Event.
